35th Street Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge Over Lake Shore Drive
Cook County, Illinois
DB Sterlin provided construction inspection services for the 35th Street Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge Over Lake Shore Drive project. Responsibilities included field inspection for adherence to plans and specifications, field measurements and quantity calculations, daily progress reports, monitoring maintenance of traffic activities, verifying contractor’s layout, and resolution of construction issues.
The project consisted of the removal of the existing 75-year-old pedestrian bridge and the construction of a new, self-anchored, post-tensioned suspension bridge. In addition to the removal of the bridge, the project also involved roadway drainage, lighting, and landscaping improvements to 35th Street, Lake Park Avenue, and Burnham Park. As part of the City’s Building a New Chicago program, the unique curving suspension bridge will provide impressive views of the skyline and Lake Michigan. The 620-foot concrete bridge features an A-shaped tower with a single suspension cable designed to support the bridge deck. The new bridge will span Metra and CN Railroads and South Lake Shore Drive, providing people with improved access to the lakefront.
