Chicago Bridge Inspection Team (CBIT)
Chicago, Illinois
DB Sterlin provides bridge inspections for 60 to 80 structures each year, performed by structural engineers and NBIS-qualified engineers. These inspections are in accordance with NBIS, AASHTO, IDOT, and CDOT requirements and guidelines. After each inspection, a formal report is prepared that focuses on the condition and rating of the bridge. The report includes IDOT inspection forms used by the State to input the inspection data into its database. The types of inspections provided include Routine NBIS, Element Level, Fracture Critical, and Special Inspection for various bridges around Chicago. Additionally, DB Sterlin performs load ratings for various bridges within Chicago per IDOT standards using AASHTOWare BrR software.
The Chicago Bridge Inspection Team (CBIT) is a joint venture team led by Benesch’s Program Manager Mark Bendok, PE, SE. They are tasked with leading city-wide inspections on Chicago’s 400+ bridges each year. CBIT is providing inspection services for the entire Chicago Department of Transportation’s (CDOT) bridge inventory. The overall objectives are to ensure the CDOT bridges are structurally adequate for their intended use, update and submit the required Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) bridge inspection forms, maintain, and update the CDOT bridge infrastructure database, and assist CDOT with prioritizing the bridge infrastructure for further capital maintenance funding.
