This floodplain management project for the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) is located along the Menomonee River parallel to State Street in Milwaukee, from N 60th Street to just east of the Highway 175 overpass. The project completes the final segment of floodwalls and levees in the area by connecting existing levees on both sides of the project limits to create a continuous system.
Engineering for Floodplain Management
Provided support for floodproofing analyses for six commercial and three residential properties, including preparation of a technical memorandum for MMSD summarizing the analysis approach, data collected, findings, and cost estimates for various floodproofing options. Also supported the design of two major interior drainage systems, including a 60-inch storm sewer behind the levee to convey overflow from the Schoonmaker Creek watershed and a 60-/72-inch storm sewer along State Street with new inlets to reduce flooding during the 100-year storm event. Responsibilities included preparing construction plans, specifications, quantity and cost estimates, inlet calculations, supplemental survey coordination, and support for FEMA CLOMR documentation and forms.
Construction Planning and Utility Coordination
Our team coordinated with multiple utilities during construction planning, including utility conflict identification, mitigation, and relocation design for City of Milwaukee sanitary sewers, communications duct banks, water mains and services, and WE Energies electrical lines. Services included preparing construction plans in accordance with City requirements for communication duct banks, water mains, and sewer mains, as well as supporting the design of the Menomonee River South Bank construction access road, including mitigation of impacts to the Oak Leaf Trail.
Building for the Future
Through the design and construction of a continuous floodwall and levee system, upgraded interior drainage infrastructure, and coordinated utility improvements, the project enhances community resiliency, reduces future flood risk, and supports the long-term sustainability of critical infrastructure throughout the surrounding area. The completed project will provide 100-year flood protection for numerous residences and businesses within the Menomonee River watershed.
