The replacement of the US-40 bridge over the Embarras River in Cumberland County, IL, included a full bridge replacement, raising the roadway profile several feet, and redesigning the roadway approaches to match the new bridge elevation.
Engineering in Support of Bridge Replacement
DB Sterlin supported Phase I efforts and Project Report development through multidisciplinary coordination and technical design services. Responsibilities included preliminary drainage design, erosion control planning, a Bicycle Travel Assessment, guardrail Length of Need calculations, preparation of a guardrail design exception, detour planning, QC reviews, and assistance with Phase I documentation and design deliverables. The team also assisted in preparing final design plans, specifications, and cost estimates, including drainage, erosion control, and detour components.
Coordinating Disciplines for Final Plan Development
The project involved multidisciplinary coordination to address floodplain constraints, roadway profile modifications, structural integration, and maintenance of traffic throughout design development.
