The Pipke Ponds Restoration project rehabilitated aging dam and outlet structures at the North and South Ponds in Pipke Park to improve flood control, restore hydraulic reliability, and maintain recreational and ecological functions. The project addressed structural deterioration and outdated water control features to ensure safe, long-term pond operations.
Engineering for Resilient Waterways
DB Sterlin evaluated outlet structure failures and designed system improvements, including abandonment of outdated diversion culverts, modification of inlet and outlet controls, repair of deteriorated concrete, and installation of new emergency spillways. Comprehensive Dam Failure Analyses under Sunny Day and High Tailwater conditions were performed using HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS to evaluate breach scenarios and downstream impacts.
Coordinating Environmental and Regulatory Requirements
The team coordinated permitting with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR), supported public engagement, and secured WDNR funding. Construction plans were completed with careful attention to protecting wildlife, recreational facilities, and flood resilience.
Building for the Future
Through hydraulic modeling, structural restoration, and thoughtful planning, the project preserves critical fish and loon habitat, enhances flood protection, and supports public access for recreation and education.
