Pace Electrification Strategy – Cook County, Illinois

The Pace Electrification Strategy supports the transition of Pace bus garages to electric power, modernizing existing facilities to accommodate electric bus operations and reinforcing Pace’s commitment to environmental sustainability. DB Sterlin provided civil engineering, surveying, and utility coordination services to ensure the successful integration of new electrical systems across multiple transit facilities.

Civil and Utility Engineering Support
DB Sterlin performed topographic surveys, preliminary site layout planning, stormwater detention design, and utility design, including identifying potential conflicts and relocations to support seamless construction. Conceptual design deliverables summarized each site, highlighting key design considerations, utility impacts, and planning requirements. Cost estimates were prepared to guide budgeting and facilitate decision-making for the electrification program.

Coordination and Stakeholder Engagement
The team led coordination between Pace and ComEd, ensuring electrical load requirements developed by the STV design team were communicated and incorporated into service applications. Work included submission of load letters, new service applications, meeting coordination, and review of concept design documents to confirm feasibility and compliance with utility requirements.

Enhancing Facility Functionality
Site improvements were designed to optimize electric bus operations, including integration of overhead chargers, loading areas, administrative spaces, and upgraded infrastructure for stormwater, sanitary, water, and gas systems. These enhancements improve operational efficiency, maintenance workflows, and compliance with local regulations, supporting a sustainable, modern transit network.
