Independence Boulevard & Central Park Avenue Bridges Over I-290 & CTA – Cook County, IL

The Independence Boulevard and Central Park Avenue bridges in Chicago are critical transportation links, carrying thousands of vehicles daily over I-290 and CTA lines. These structures, including S.N. 016-2086 (Independence Boulevard North Bound), S.N. 016-2085 (Independence Boulevard South Bound), and S.N. 016-2091 (Central Park Avenue), play an essential role in connecting neighborhoods, businesses, and transit systems. This project ensures that these vital routes continue to operate efficiently while meeting modern transportation demands and accessibility standards.

Comprehensive design and engineering
DB Sterlin is serving as the prime consultant, leading Phase II design efforts to replace these aging bridges and construct a new CDOT-funded “cap” bridge. This work enhances safety, mobility, and long-term durability for all users. The DB Sterlin team provides a full range of engineering services for this complex rehabilitation and replacement project. These services include hands-on inspections of substructures and retaining walls, structural analysis and design of bridge superstructures, piers, and abutments, as well as civil design services such as Maintenance of Traffic planning, drainage, environmental considerations, and utility coordination and design.

All structural components are being replaced or newly constructed, including semi-integral abutments, solid concrete piers, steel plate girder superstructures, bridge decks, and complex approach slabs with new ADA-compliant ramps. The team also conducts comprehensive surveying, prepares detailed contract plans, specifications, and cost estimates, and ensures compliance with CDOT policies, local agency requirements, and permitting processes, including coordination with the CDOT Office of Underground Coordination. This thorough planning ensures minimal disruption to traffic, pedestrians, and the surrounding environment during construction.
