The Chicago Skyway High Bridge Digital Twin and AI Program modernizes bridge inspection and monitoring by creating a detailed digital twin and integrating AI-powered analytics. This initiative enhances safety, improves asset management, and enables more efficient, data-driven decision-making for a critical transportation link.
Phase II Engineering and Digital Twin Development
DB Sterlin provided engineering and technology support for the program, leveraging advanced tools to deliver actionable insights and help extend the bridge’s service life. The firm was selected by the Skyway Concession Company to perform advanced inspections and develop a 3D digital twin model of the Calumet River High Bridge and its adjacent approach span viaducts, the tallest and longest bridge in Chicago. Stretching 7,243 feet across 43 spans, this steel through-truss and deck-truss viaduct rises 235 feet above the river, providing 125 feet of vertical clearance for industrial shipping traffic. Traditional NBIS inspections require hands-on assessment of all Non-Redundant Steel Tension Members (NSTM), involving coordination with utilities, property owners, and three railroads, as well as specialized inspection vehicles and lane closures.
This project leverages drones, 3D digital twin modeling, and predictive artificial intelligence to complement conventional inspections. High-resolution aerial images of every structural element are processed into a digital twin with millimetric precision, while AI analyzes the data to detect damage, track deterioration, and forecast future structural changes. This approach enhances safety, reduces inspection risks, and supports optimized maintenance and capital planning.
Innovative Technology for Infrastructure
By combining drone imagery, photogrammetry, and AI analytics, DB Sterlin enables more efficient and precise bridge monitoring. Structural engineers can remotely assess complex components, prioritize repairs, and plan maintenance to prevent failures and extend the bridge’s service life.
Setting a New Standard
The Chicago Skyway High Bridge Digital Twin and AI Inspection project demonstrates how advanced technology can transform bridge management. By supplementing traditional inspections with data-driven tools, DB Sterlin ensures this iconic bridge remains safe, resilient, and reliable for decades.
