BNSF Railroad Bridge Reconstruction over I-294 – Cook County, Illinois

The Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railroad bridge over the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) in Cook County was reconstructed as part of the Illinois Tollway’s $4 billion Central Tri-State initiative, designed to increase capacity and enhance the driving experience along the corridor.

Bridge Reconstruction and Infrastructure Improvements
The existing BNSF bridge was replaced with a longer, wider two-span steel beam structure to accommodate four tracks and allow for the reconstruction and widening of the Tollway below. A bypass bridge maintained uninterrupted freight and commuter rail operations for BNSF and Metra. Additional improvements included roadway lighting, retaining and noise walls, and upgraded drainage with storm sewer pipes and cast-in-place and precast concrete box culverts.

Construction Oversight and Materials Management
DB Sterlin’s primary responsibilities included material inspection and coordination, field inspection and documentation, erosion and sediment control inspection, and topographic surveying for layout verification and quantity tracking. The team ensured all work complied with project specifications while maintaining safe operations near active rail lines. Coordination with IDOT, Metra, BNSF Railway, Cook County, local municipalities, park districts, and emergency services minimized disruptions during construction.
