This rural roadway reconditioning project along WIS 164 (Big Bend Drive) between Henneberry Avenue and Denoon Road in the Town of Vernon involved milling and overlaying just over two miles of pavement, installing new asphalt and aggregate base, and improving the subgrade in select areas. The project included widening shoulders from 3 ft to 5 ft, adding rumble strips, replacing guardrails and cross culverts, upgrading turn lanes, and installing new pavement markings. These improvements enhanced pavement condition, safety, ride quality, and drainage along the corridor.
Engineering for Stormwater
DB Sterlin was responsible for the development of the stormwater report, including associated stormwater management calculations and documentation related to water quality and water quantity controls for this project. Our work included culvert analysis and design for multiple existing culverts under STH 164 to verify appropriate sizing and outfall riprap placement requirements.
Complex Hydrologic & Hydraulic
Our team redesigned a culvert conveying Ripple Brook, an unstudied stream, under STH 164 to prevent roadway overtopping and coordinated the required modifications with the Wisconsin DNR and local communities. Additionally, a complex hydrologic and hydraulic evaluation was performed to account for multiple detention areas within the watershed, several of which resulted from undersized culverts under local roadways, to support accurate overtopping analysis for STH 164.

Through comprehensive stormwater analysis and strategic culvert and drainage improvements, the project enhances long-term roadway resilience, reduces overtopping risk, and improves overall corridor safety and drainage performance.
